Willey Cottage
“Charming, relaxed, first class. Five years straight.”
— Greg S., Guest
The Captiva Project originated when the client acquired a parcel of land adjacent to the renowned Rauschenberg Foundation. Initially envisioned as luxury rental units, the project evolved into a heartfelt 8-month endeavor. The development, later named Sea Pines, comprises two distinct properties, Willey Cottage and Beach Daisy. Both charming cottages nestled in a quaint village teeming with eclectic shops, delectable eateries and an island bustling with life. Situated adjacent to the expansive Rauschenberg property, these cottages afford a secluded sanctuary amidst bustling surroundings. Notably, the Rauschenberg Foundation also hosts an esteemed artist residency program, adding to the cultural allure of the locale.
Willey, a charming cottage with a rich heritage, is the original historic cottage on the property. One of it’s owners was the famous local fiber artist, doll maker, rug hooker & knitter Katie Gardenia, original founder of the Bubble Room (a local favorite restaurant famed for its cakes, eternal Christmas theme, and prime rib). The other cottage, Beach Daisy, was built some time in the late 60s, early 70s and is set back from the beach allowing it some privacy and added space for games and young families.
Initially envisioned as a quick ‘fix’ up, the project encountered complexities related to historical registry compliance and stringent coastal construction regulations, necessitating innovative solutions throughout. An unforeseen kitchen remodel became imperative as a result of underlying floor damage, underscoring the project's comprehensive nature. The second phase of the project will see the introduction of wallpaper, along with paint touch-ups to elevate the overall aesthetic.
Phase one of the project was mostly a series of renovations to enhance its bathrooms and kitchen (although the Kitchen wasn’t in the original plan). The project encompassed meticulous replanning, construction work, selective lighting installations, furniture reorganization, staging efforts, and the inclusion of guest packages. A significant portion of the furniture was sourced from the client's Lakehouse in Missouri, infusing a personal touch into the space.
With looming bookings, the project was swiftly executed, necessitating a carefully coordinated approach. The upper level was revamped to accommodate distinct sleeping zones, while a cozy sitting room complete with a convenient sleeper sofa allows for two living spaces in the home. A supplementary half bath was integrated into the lower level to enhance accessibility, alongside the relocation of the laundry facilities for added convenience and space saving.
The downstairs master suite underwent a major remodel as well - the flooring was replaced and the relocation of the bathroom door from the kitchen allowed for the addition of an official “master bathroom” including a luxurious zellige tile shower, elevating the space's functionality. A charming 'dressing area' was added, complete with a mirror and elegant brass lights.
